Tackling mould in the workplace

Not only is it unsightly and smelly, but mould in the workplace can also pose a potential health risk too. In fact, according to the World Health Organisation: In Europe, an estimated 10–50% of the indoor environments where human beings live, work and play are.

Step 1: Locate the source

You can clean the mould away every day, but this won’t actually tackle the source of the problem. To completely eradicate mould in your workplace you must find out where it’s coming from and what is causing it.

Mould is caused by excess moisture which cannot escape. From our experience, the majority of mould is caused by one of the following:

Damage – Whether it is an unsealed window, a leaky pipe, or a loose roof tile. Find the source of the mould, fix the problem and the mould will disappear.

Inadequate ventilation – This could be a result of hanging washing inside, showering in an unventilated room or condensation.

Rising damp – This is when water from the ground seeps into the bricks and mortar and rises through the walls. If you are suffering with rising damp, you will need to seek professional help to dampproof the cavity of the walls.

Step 2: Remove the infestation

Once you have identified what is causing the mould and fixed the problem to prevent it from returning, it is time to remove the mould that is left. The best way to clean away mould is by using hydrogen peroxide or vinegar in a spray bottle.

Step 3: Ventilate the area

Once you have located the cause of the mould and removed it, the last step is to ventilate the area well. Either open the windows, invest in a small heater, or use a dehumidifier to remove the excess moisture from the air and prevent the mould from reappearing.

If you discover mould in your workplace, do not leave it for another day – tackle the source straight away and remove the infestation.
