How has COVID-19 changed cleaning in the workplace

COVID-19 is transmitted when a person touches an object or surface that is contaminated with SARS-CoV-2 (the virus that causes COVID-19) and then touches their own eyes, noses, or mouths.

Surfaces and objects can easily become contaminated with COVID-19 from droplets landing on them due to someone who is infected with the virus coughing or sneezing near them or touching them.

It is known that increased cleaning of surfaces and objects reduces the presence of the virus. Therefore, regular cleaning plays a vital role in limiting the transmission of COVID-19 in the workplace.

In light of this, employers operating workplaces during the COVID-19 pandemic must now implement specific cleaning practices in order to adhere to guidelines and protect their employees and visitors.

These practices include:

Use of effective chemicals

The World Health Organisation states that: “bleach may be used at a recommended concentration of 0.1% or 1,000ppm. Alcohol at 70-90% can also be used for surface disinfection. Surfaces must be cleaned with water and soap or detergent first to remove dirt, followed by disinfection.”

Dispose of waste correctly

If you have had an employee or visitor on-site with symptoms of the virus, personal waste from these individuals must be disposed of differently to regular waste.

Waste from cleaning areas where they have been (including PPE, disposable cloths, and used tissues) should be double-bagged and stored for at least 72 hours before disposing of with regular rubbish.
